National Truth and Reconciliation Day: Primary Care Collaborative Statement

On the inaugural National Truth and Reconciliation Day being recognized today across Canada, the Primary Care Collaborative values the opportunity and responsibility to acknowledge some of the actions that can help support better understanding of colonization, the trauma of residential schools for Indigenous people and communities, and the ongoing impacts of systemic racism, and the steps to create safer spaces and change for Indigenous health and wellbeing.

For our collaborative group of primary health care associations, ensuring our staff have the tools they need to support improving Indigenous healthcare experiences and outcomes, is an essential step towards truth and reconciliation. Through the Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) Program, offered by the Indigenous Primary Health Care Council, our associations are committed to taking concrete steps towards the respect and understanding at the core of de-colonization work. The ICS Program will help us to better understand our roles as individuals in supporting primary care providers to decolonize health care, and also in organizational change both within our associations and among the partners we work with.

Through a series of moderated and facilitated sessions, the program facilitates a deeper level of understanding of how colonialism is embedded in health systems and services, and how to motivate change at the organizational levels. The ICS Program also explicitly connects the impacts of racism and discrimination on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous people and communities, with real-world examples of how these impacts play out in people’s lives. Importantly, this program also includes follow-up steps for organizations and providers, and offers tools to deepen the learning of the initial program. Ultimately, the ICS Program supports a practical understanding of the truth of colonization for Indigenous people’s experiences, and then some paths for how to support reconciliation.

The Primary Care Collaborative believes that collective commitments to actions such as mandating Indigenous cultural safety training for public service organizations is what will ultimately change the culture and the mindset of individuals and organizations. Increasing awareness of both historical context and connections to the current environments and conditions that Indigenous people face in health care is an essential foundational step to moving forward together, and to ensuring that Indigenous people’s voices, concerns and trauma are heard and heeded within organizations, policy-making circles and governments alike.

The Primary Care Collaborative, therefore, remains committed to our own journey of Truth and Reconciliation this year, and on this inaugural day, by committing all of the staff at our associations to undertake ICS Program training, and to engage with other programs such as the University of Alberta’s Indigenous Canada program, or resources and modules from Cancer Care Ontario. In doing so, we also challenge and call on the wider public and government sectors across all of Ontario, who have also engaged with the ICS Program, to set out your organizational plans and commitments to ongoing learning and the steps being taken to promote organizational transformation.

Taken as a whole, it is these actions, which will outlast Truth and Reconciliation Day that will enable us to start moving on a path where Indigenous people and communities will be able to lead safer, healthier and happier lives, with lowered risk of violence and trauma from colonization’s impacts.

About the Primary Care Collaborative (PCC):

We are a coalition of primary care organizations collectively representing 14,000 family doctors, 1,000+ primary care nurse practitioners, 286 primary care teams, 28 Indigenous primary care teams, including northern, rural, and remote teams in Ontario. This alliance of comprehensive primary care organizations joined together by common purpose to build on the collaborative work during the COVID-19 pandemic as we move towards recovery in a time of health system transformation. The PCC provides a collective and cohesive voice with the purpose of advancing equitable person-centred primary care in Ontario and is focused on influencing policy by creating a unified voice towards resolving barriers or challenges that prevent comprehensive primary care from being the foundation of the health system.

Renforcer notre acceptation de la vérité pour comprendre nos rôles dans la réconciliation

Plus de 1 300 tombes non marquées ont été découvertes jusqu’à maintenant au Canada; de nombreux enfants autochtones n’ont pas été encore retournés à leur peuple et de nombreux pensionnats indiens qui ne sont pas encore reconnus par les dirigeants canadiens, qui portent seulement leur attention aux 139 pensionnats financés directement par le gouvernement fédéral.

Depuis le mois de mai, nous sommes aux prises avec les vérités dont les communautés autochtones nous font part depuis des années. Les Canadiennes et Canadiens commencent à admettre le fait que plus de 15 000 enfants autochtones ont souffert et été victimes d’atrocités dans des pensionnats indiens sur une période s’échelonnant sur plus de 100 ans.

Que ce soit notamment les mouvements « Idle No More » ou « Chaque enfant compte », nous sommes tous témoins des preuves indéniables de génocide et du traumatisme persistant causé par les pensionnats indiens, et de la violence provoquée par la colonisation dont des milliers de personnes et d’innombrables communautés autochtones sur ces terres ont été victimes. En cette première Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation au Canada, ce sont ces vérités que nous avons longtemps ignorées qui doivent demeurer à l’avant-plan.

Ce qui perdure depuis des décennies, des lois et des politiques ancrées dans le racisme, le colonialisme et la suprématie blanche, l’apathie et les excuses notamment de la part des gouvernements et des dirigeants communautaires, des grandes sociétés et des propriétaires d’entreprises est exposé au grand jour. Pendant des décennies, nous avons ignoré les témoignages et les vibrants appels des leaders et communautés autochtones et ignoré la souffrance des enfants et des familles qui s’est poursuivie avec la rafle des années soixante et les programmes de familles d’accueil, des gestes qui sont dénoncés pour avoir permis aux systèmes de la colonisation de continuer en toute impunité. En dépit des 94 appels à l’action de la Commission de vérité et de réconciliation du Canada et d’autres appels à l’action depuis, il y a plus d’enfants autochtones en familles d’accueil que lors de la rafle des années soixante. Nous observons toujours de l’inaction et de l’opposition relativement aux efforts visant à obtenir justice pour les femmes et les filles autochtones disparues et assassinées. Au Canada, nous sommes tous concernés par la vérité et la réconciliation. Nous avons tous un rôle à jouer dans ces démarches, que nous le reconnaissions et entreprenions ce parcours ou non.

En cette première Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation, nous devons nous poser les questions suivantes : Quelles sont les significations de nos réflexions, appels à l’action et engagements initiaux? À quoi ressemble vraiment le parcours passant par la vérité vers la réconciliation? Comment pouvons-nous assurer que la voie vers la réconciliation repose sur une approche fondée sur le respect des droits? Que signifie la « remise des terres » et comment la guérison autochtone en serait-elle favorisée? En ce qui concerne les systèmes de soins de santé, comment pouvons-nous nous assurer que les espaces sont plus sécuritaires pour favoriser la santé et le bien-être des Autochtones? Comment pouvons-nous procéder à la décolonisation des systèmes, des politiques et des institutions qui ont été créés en s’inspirant des pensionnats indiens? À quoi ressemble l’autodétermination en matière de santé et de bien-être et quelles sont les mesures requises pour favoriser une gestion autonome et la santé des Autochtones entre les mains des Autochtones?

La quête pour la vérité et la levée du voile sur des histoires effacées sont requises pour commencer à répondre à ces questions. Le récit de Joyce Echaquan, une femme de la Nation Atikamekw qui a été traitée de façon humiliante et raciste dans un hôpital du Québec avant sa mort, est un exemple récent montrant à quel point le racisme peut être mortel dans les systèmes de soins de santé au Canada. Ce n’est qu’un récit parmi tant d’autres d’Autochtones tués par le racisme systémique ancré dans les systèmes coloniaux du Canada, notamment les systèmes de santé, de justice et d’éducation, racisme engendré par des décennies d’inaction qui se répètent alors que les préjudices, l’indifférence, la haine et l’ignorance se transmettent de génération en génération.

L’Alliance et ses membres s’engagent à lutter contre les effets de la colonisation sur la santé des Autochtones. C’est la raison pour laquelle nous nous sommes engagés à mettre en œuvre le programme de sécurité culturelle autochtone du Conseil des services de santé de première ligne aux Autochtones. Cette formation exhaustive aide les participants à désapprendre les structures coloniales, à mieux connaître et à respecter l’histoire et les expériences autochtones, et à se sensibiliser au traumatisme et au racisme intergénérationnels vécus aujourd’hui dans les soins de santé. Nous nous engageons à mieux comprendre la vérité pour favoriser la réconciliation en améliorant les expériences vécues par les Autochtones relativement aux soins de santé, et en créant des espaces plus sécuritaires et en assurant une redevabilité dans les divers contextes de soins de santé. Qu’il s’agisse des hôpitaux indiens, du principe de Jordan, ou des répercussions des changements climatiques sur la santé et le bien-être des communautés, une histoire complexe et de nombreuses expériences et vérités d’aujourd’hui restent à découvrir et à comprendre. L’Alliance s’engage aussi à continuer d’appuyer la transition à des soins de santé menés, conçus et régis par des Autochtones, par une démarche visant à remettre la santé des Autochtones entre les mains des Autochtones. Nous sommes également solidaires avec nos collègues du Conseil des services de santé de première ligne aux Autochtones dans leur revendication pour l’équité en santé et la décolonisation et par nos efforts organisationnels de décolonisation de l’Alliance.

Les évènements des derniers mois ont transmis un message fort : la démarche de réconciliation requiert que nous prenions le temps et l’espace pour comprendre ce qui s’est passé, ce qui se passe encore aujourd’hui, les répercussions sur nous tous, et le rôle que nous jouons par nos actions ou notre inaction. L’impact et les séquelles des pensionnats indiens, du système de protection de l’enfance, du système de justice et de l’incarcération, des systèmes de soins de santé, de notre manque de respect des droits et traités, et de la violence coloniale ancrée dans nos systèmes et politiques, se font ressentir encore aujourd’hui. Ces vérités ne se trouvent pas dans les chapitres d’un livre d’histoire; nous les vivons maintenant. C’est la raison pour laquelle l’Alliance s’engage à comprendre son rôle dans la découverte de la vérité et dans la réalisation d’une plus grande réconciliation en vue de la guérison et de la compréhension et d’un respect entre les leaders, les personnes et les communautés autochtones et les personnes non autochtones.

Deepening our acceptance of truth to understand our roles in reconciliation

The number of unmarked graves uncovered currently stands at more than 1,300 across Canada, with many Indigenous children still to be brought home to their peoples, and with many residential schools still unrecognized by Canada’s leaders, who’ve only focused on the 139 schools funded directly by the federal government.

Since May, we are reckoning with the truths that Indigenous communities have shared with us for years. Canadians are also coming to face the fact that more than 150,000 Indigenous children endured hardships and atrocities in Indian residential schools over a period of more than 100 years.

From the “Idle no more” to the “Every Child Matters” movements, we are all bearing witness to the undeniable evidence of genocide and the ongoing traumatic impacts of residential schools, as well as the violence that colonization wrought for thousands of Indigenous people and communities throughout these lands. On the inaugural National Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada, it’s these truths which we have long ignored that must remain in the spotlight.

Decades of law and policies rooted in racism, colonialism and white supremacy, decades of apathy and excuses from government and community leaders, corporations and business owners and others, are on full display. Decades spent ignoring the testimony and pleas of Indigenous leaders and communities, of ignoring how children’s and families’ suffering continued with the Sixties Scoop and with foster care programs, are being called out for enabling colonization’s systems to continue unchecked. Despite the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 calls to action and more calls to action since, more Indigenous children are under foster care than there were during the Sixties Scoop. We continue to see inaction and pushback against attempts to achieve justice for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Everyone in Canada is implicated in truth and reconciliation. Everyone has a role to play in these processes, whether they choose to acknowledge it and walk the path or not.

With the first National Truth and Reconciliation Day now upon us, we need to ask ourselves: what do our initial reflections, calls to action and commitments mean? What does the path through truth, and towards reconciliation, really look like? How do we ensure the road to reconciliation is embedded in the rights-based approach? What does “land back” mean and how could it support Indigenous healing? Specific to health care systems, how do we ensure spaces are safer for Indigenous people to support their health and wellbeing? How do we decolonize systems, policies and institutions that themselves were modelled in the image of residential schools? What does self-determination in health and wellbeing look like, and what are the steps needed to support more self-governance and Indigenous health in Indigenous hands?

Seeking truth and surfacing erased histories are prerequisites to beginning to answer these questions. The story of Joyce Echaquan, an Atikamekw woman who was subjected to degrading, racist treatment in a Quebec hospital before she died, is a recent example of how racism can be lethal in Canada’s health systems. It is one story among many others of Indigenous people killed by the systemic racism rooted in Canada’s colonial systems – health, justice, education and others -- enabled by decades of inaction, repeated again as generations continue to pass along prejudices, indifference, hatred and ignorance.

The Alliance and its members are committed to disrupting colonization’s impacts on Indigenous health. That’s why we are committed to implementing the Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) program of the Indigenous Primary Health Care Council (IPHCC). This comprehensive training helps people unlearn colonial structures, to build awareness and respect of Indigenous experiences and history, and the intergenerational trauma and racism experienced in health care today. We commit to a deeper understanding of the truth to support reconciliation through improving the health care experiences of Indigenous people, and ensuring safer spaces and accountability within health care contexts. From Indian hospitals, to Jordan’s Principle, to the impacts of climate change on community health and wellbeing, there is a lot of complex history and present-day experiences and truths to uncover and understand. The Alliance is also committed to continuing to support the shift to Indigenous-led, designed and governed health care, through the process of returning Indigenous health to Indigenous hands. We also stand shoulder to shoulder with our IPHCC colleagues, in their own advocacy for health equity and decolonization, and in our own organizational efforts to decolonize the Alliance.

The last several months contain a powerful message: the process of reconciliation demands that we take time and space to understand what happened, and what’s still happening and how it impacts all of us, and how we’re contributing to it by our actions (or inaction). The impact and legacy of residential schools, the child welfare system, the justice system and incarceration, healthcare, and how we respect treaties and rights, and colonial violence embedded in our systems and policies, is ongoing. These truths are not chapters in a history book – they’re the lives we’re living now. It’s why the Alliance is committed to understanding our own roles in uncovering truth and realizing reconciliation more deeply, towards healing, understanding and respect between Indigenous leaders, people and communities and non-Indigenous people.

Letter to Premier Ford, Minister Elliott, re: Directive 6 and implementation of mandatory vaccine policies for team-based primary care

Re: Directive 6 must apply to patient-facing team-based primary care providers during COVID-19

Dear Premier and Deputy Premier,

First, we want to take the opportunity to thank your government for the leadership you’ve shown with the introduction of the vaccine certificate and Directive #6, which requires the implementation of a mandatory vaccine policy for employees, staff, contractors, volunteers and students in certain health care settings. As associations representing team-based primary care providers and other front-facing health professionals in every community of Ontario, we see Directive #6 as integral to protecting as many people as possible while giving options to our providers to mandate policies that work best for their organizations’ environments.

Directive #6 is also an approach that allows us to take seriously and respond empathically to concerns about mistrust in the health system from populations and communities who’ve faced discrimination in the health system, while still making it clear to Ontario health care workers that getting vaccinated is a top priority in keeping health care settings safe for everyone. Every serious illness and death we can prevent, every outbreak we can prevent, every ICU admission we can prevent – will bring us closer to the end of the pandemic.

So we’re writing to you today to ask you to expand Directive #6 to include team-based primary care settings that include our organizations – community health centres, family health teams and nurse practitioner-led clinics. Premier, Deputy Premier, as you know, our organizations deliver primary health care and social services to many of the populations most vulnerable to COVID-19 and its related impacts. Our members’ staff do outreach, both in shelters, urban areas and to isolated seniors; we provide harm reduction services and supports, often meeting people where they’re at; and our providers are also on the front lines of testing, community supports and vaccination rollout efforts. Simply put, providers at our member organizations are face to face with the virus, working with people most vulnerable to it, on a daily basis.

Our members stand ready to implement Directive #6 and its guidance on how to encourage staff and related workers to get a COVID-19 vaccine. Many are ready to use their authority as laid out by the Chief Medical Officer of Health to, like University Health Network, go beyond the minimum requirements of the Directive. Your leadership can help enable this vital path of actions to get key Ontario health care settings to the highest levels of vaccination possible, and to protect more vulnerable Ontarians.

We hope to hear back from you as soon as possible about the inclusion patient-facing primary care providers in Directive #6, and we are ready to meet to address any concerns or questions.

Les événements se commenceront à partir de Lundi, le 27 Septembre 2021, de 9 h HNE, pour 5 jours consécutifs dont 1.5 heures par séance. Chaque séance va durer pour 60 minutes, assistée par les intervenants réputés suivants et va être suivie par un choix d’activités de réseautage pour 30 minutes. Le 1er juillet, nous réfléchissons aux vérités du passé et du présent du Canada et aux actions pour soutenir la décolonisation et la guérison.

Cette fête du Canada n'est pas comme les autres, et elle ne devrait pas l'être. Comme plusieurs, nous avons l'impression que les célébrations habituelles et la reconnaissance d'une histoire dont tant d'Autochtones et leurs vies sont effacés n'ont tout simplement aucun sens. C'est une année et un temps pour réfléchir, comprendre et affronter les dures vérités sur le Canada, son histoire et nous-mêmes.

Alors cette année, au 1er juillet, nous allons :

reconnaître que tous ceux qui vivent ici ne partagent pas également l'abondance et la paix relative de ces terres, y compris ses ressources, sa sécurité et ses possibilités de santé et de bien-être ;
réfléchir à l'histoire du Canada et de la colonisation canadienne des personnes et nations autochtones qui vivent sur ce territoire depuis bien avant l'existence du « Canada » ;
comprendre que cette histoire est douloureuse et exploiteuse pour les peuples autochtones, et comprendre en outre que l'histoire violente de la colonisation, ses effets sur des générations de personnes et de communautés autochtones, se poursuit à ce jour ;
Faire le deuil des récentes découvertes de corps d'enfants autochtones sur les sites des pensionnats, pendant que nous réfléchissons à la façon d'honorer et de détenir la vérité sur cette histoire dévastatrice à mesure que de nouvelles découvertes sont faites ;
appeler les gouvernements, les organisations et les individus à s'engager de bonne foi avec les peuples autochtones du Canada, afin de soutenir l'avancement du leadership autochtone et de la souveraineté en matière de santé. Apprenez-en davantage sur ce travail auprès du Conseil des soins de santé primaires autochtones;
Appeler tous les Canadiens et les nouveaux arrivants à faire leur part pour mettre en œuvre les 94 appels à l'action décrits dans le rapport final de la CVR, en commençant par les lire en détail et en réfléchissant aux façons d'agir dans nos propres vies. Trouvez-les ici en anglais et en français;
Marchez en solidarité avec nos voisins autochtones vers un nouveau chemin de vérité et de guérison.

Marquons le 1er juillet cette année non pas en nous concentrant sur le pays que nous faisons semblant d’être, mais en nous concentrant sur les mesures qu'il faudra prendre pour devenir le pays que nous voulons être.

On July 1, we are reflecting on the truths of Canada's past and present and actions to support decolonization and healing.

This Canada Day isn’t like any other, and it shouldn’t be. Like many, we feel as if the usual celebrations and recognition of a history from which so many Indigenous people and their lives are erased simply does not make any sense. This is a year and a time for reflection, understanding, and facing hard truths about Canada, its history, and ourselves.

So this year, on July 1, we:

Recognize that not all who live here share equally in the abundance and the relative peace of these lands, including its resources, safety, and opportunities for health and wellbeing;
Reflect on the history of Canada and Canadian colonization with Indigenous people and nations who have lived on this land since long before “Canada” existed;
Understand that this history is painful for and exploitive of Indigenous people, and further understand that the violent history of colonization, its effects on generations of Indigenous people and communities, continues to this day;
Grieve the recent discoveries of Indigenous children’s bodies on the sites of residential schools, while we reflect on how to honour and hold the truth about this devastating history as more discoveries are made;
Call on governments, organizations and individuals to engage in good faith with Indigenous people in Canada, to support advancement of Indigenous leadership and health sovereignty. Learn more about this work from the Indigenous Primary Health Care Council;
Call on all Canadians and newcomers to do their part to enact the 94 calls to action outlined in the final report of the TRC, beginning by reading them in detail and thinking about ways to act in our own lives. Find them here in English and French;
Walk in solidarity with our Indigenous neighbours towards a new path of truth and healing.

Let’s mark July 1 not with a focus on the country we claim to be, but by focusing on the actions it will take to become the country we want to be.

Déclaration de l’Alliance pour la Fierté 2021

À un moment comme celui que nous traversons, alors que nous voyons clairement le traumatisme engendré par la colonisation, le racisme, la haine, l’homophobie, la transphobie et la biphobie, ainsi que leurs répercussions, l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé est solidaire avec toutes les personnes 2SLGBTQ+ en opposition à la haine et à l’oppression sous toutes ses formes.

Après une année comme nulle autre, nous attendons aussi avec impatience ce weekend une célébration de la Fierté qui sera aussi comme nulle autre. De bien des façons, il s’agira d’un temps de réjouissance alors que les personnes pourront se rencontrer pour célébrer et démontrer leur solidarité envers les gestes posés pour la vie, la sécurité, la santé et les droits des personnes 2SLGBTQ+.

La Fierté est aussi un moment important pour souligner l’histoire de ce mouvement très ancré dans les actions organisées, prises et menées par les personnes transgenres de race noire et les femmes noires, autochtones et de couleur afin de lutter contre la violence policière et pour reconnaître et honorer les droits de la personne. Ce mouvement a une longue histoire, de ses origines à New York à Stonewall et ailleurs, comme à Toronto lors des manifestations et des actions contre la violence policière qui ont commencé dans les années 70, et dans ses actions et son opposition qui se poursuivent aujourd’hui d’un bout à l’autre du Canada et ailleurs dans le monde. Lorsque vous lisez sur l’histoire de la Fierté ailleurs au pays, vous remarquerez un thème commun d’opposition à la violence policière ainsi qu’à la haine et à l’oppression systémiques.

Nous tenons aussi à prendre un moment pour souligner les répercussions sur la santé, particulièrement les répercussions disproportionnées de la pandémie qui se poursuivent sur la santé mentale de nombreuses personnes et communautés 2SLGBTQ+. L’Alliance et ses membres sont engagés à offrir des programmes, des ressources et des services accessibles et diversifiés aux personnes bispirituelles, lesbiennes, gaies, bisexuelles, trans, queer, en questionnement, non-binaires et asexuelles en Ontario.

Étant donné que de nombreux endroits publics sécuritaires sont fermés ou que leur accès est restreint depuis longtemps, étant donné que de nombreuses personnes sont coincées dans des milieux familiaux qui ne sont pas sécuritaires ou sont dans d’autres situations d’isolement avec un risque accru de violence, et étant donné les cas de violence homophobe dans des endroits où les gens se sentaient en sécurité par le passé, cette célébration de la Fierté exhorte également les gouvernements et les leaders du système de la santé à en faire plus pour favoriser la santé et le bien-être des personnes 2SLGBTQ+.

Il est essentiel que des programmes et services accessibles à toutes les communautés de l’Ontario soient offerts pour satisfaire aux besoins particuliers de ces populations. Des soins de santé mentale accessibles en temps opportun et des ressources pour les personnes et les jeunes qui souffrent de traumatismes ou qui sont susceptibles d’être victimes de violence sont tout aussi essentiels. La population 2SLGBTQ+, historiquement marginalisée par le système de santé et exclue notamment du système de l’éducation, du système de l’emploi et des services de soutien social, a besoin de ressources additionnelles offertes par les communautés elles-mêmes pour que les inégalités causées par la pandémie ne soient pas exacerbées davantage.

De nombreuses organisations de santé communautaires offrent des services accessibles, sécuritaires et inclusifs qui sont essentiels au bien-être des populations 2SLGBTQ+ dans les grandes villes, les petites collectivités rurales et aux quatre coins de la province : le CSC Quest à St Catharines qui offre par les services 2SLGBTQ+ Rainbow Niagara une des principales cliniques en matière de soins de santé trans; le CSC du Centre-Ville à Ottawa et son programme de santé trans et LGBTQ+; Planned Parenthood à Toronto et ses services de soutien pour les jeunes en matière d’orientation sexuelle et d’identité de genre; le Centre de santé intercommunautaire de London et ses soins de santé trans; le CSC LAMP dans Mississauga-Est; les CSC NorWest à Thunder Bay; ou les points de liaison pour des services offerts par des centres comme le CSC South East Grey CHC à Markdale.

Alors avec FIERTÉ, nous témoignons de notre solidarité avec toutes les personnes et les communautés 2SLGBTQ+ en opposition à la haine et à l’oppression sous toutes ses formes, et en opposition à l’oppression et l’exclusion systémiques. Nous sommes solidaires avec la FIERTÉ en appui à l’amour sous toutes ses formes, à toutes les identités sexuelles et identités de genre, et aux politiques et aux systèmes inclusifs qui favorisent la santé et le bien-être des populations 2SLGBTQ+, et nous témoignons de notre solidarité intersectionnelle avec toutes les communautés noires, autochtones et racialisées en opposition à la colonisation et au racisme. Alliance Pride Statement 2021

At a time like the present, when we see starkly the trauma and impacts of colonization, of racism and hate, and homophobia, transphobia and biphobia, the Alliance for Healthier Communities stands together with all people who identify as 2SLGBTQ+ in defiance of hate and oppression in all its forms.

After a year like no other, we also look forward this weekend to a celebration of Pride like no other. In many ways, this will be a joyous time as people re-connect to celebrate and mark solidarity around action for the lives, safety, health and rights of 2SLGBTQ+ people and communities.

Pride is also a key moment to highlight the history of this movement as deeply rooted in actions organized, taken and led by Black Trans and BIPOC women against police violence, and for recognition and honouring of human rights. This history ranges from the early days in New York at Stonewall, and elsewhere, such as in Toronto with protests and actions against police violence that began in the 1970s and in actions and resistance that continue today across Canada and the world. Check out this compendium for other Pride histories from across the country, and you’ll notice a common theme of resistance to police violence, systemic oppression and hate.

We also want to take a moment to focus on the health and especially the disproportionate mental health effects the pandemic has had and continues to have for many 2SLGBTQ+ people and communities. The Alliance and our members are committed to accessible and diverse offerings of programs, supports and services serving Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer/Questioning, non-binary and asexual folks in Ontario.

With so many of the usual safe public spaces closed or restricted for so long, with so many people stuck or restrained within unsafe family settings or other isolated situations, with heightened violence risk, and instances of homophobic violence occurring in spaces where people had previously felt safe, this Pride is one that also calls on governments and health system leaders alike to do more to support health and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQ+ people. Accessible programs and services, available within all communities across Ontario, are essential to meeting specific needs of these populations. Accessible and timely mental health care is a key piece, as well as supports for people and youth living with trauma or the risk of violence. The 2SLGBTQ+ population – historically marginalized within the health system and excluded in systems ranging from education to employment to social supports and others – requires additional support by and from the communities themselves to ensure pandemic-related inequities are not further exacerbated.

There are many examples of community health organizations who provide inclusive, safe and accessible services vital for 2SLGBTQ+ populations’ wellbeing, in big cities, smaller rural communities and everywhere in between across the province: one of the leading clinics for Trans care in Canada, offered through Quest CHC’s Rainbow Niagara 2SLGBTQ+ Services in St. Catharines; Centretown CHC’s LGBTQ+ and Trans Health program in Ottawa; Planned Parenthood in Toronto for its services supporting youth around sexual orientation and gender identity; Trans Health care at London Intercommunity Health; in East Mississauga through LAMP CHC; NorWest CHCs in Thunder Bay; or connection points for services offered by centres such as South East Grey CHC in Markdale, Ontario, are just a few examples.

So with PRIDE, we stand strongly with 2SLGBTQ+ people and communities against hate in all its forms, and against systemic oppression and exclusion. We stand with PRIDE for love in all its forms, for celebrating gender and sexual identities in all their forms, for inclusive systems and policies that support the health and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQ+ populations, and we stand in intersectional solidarity with Black, Indigenous and racialized communities against colonization and racism.
