Leading Quality Improvement: Essentials for Managers

In successful health care systems, managers play a vital role in meeting their organizations’ key strategic and improvement goals. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement's (IHI's) Leading Quality Improvement: Essentials for Managers uses innovative teaching methods to enhance engagement and deepen understanding of quality improvement to improve organizational efficiency.

# Turn High-Level Objectives Into Action

As the bridge between senior leadership and the front lines, it is a manager’s job to turn high-level objectives into action at the department or unit level. Far too often, managers are not equipped or supported with the right skills, resources, or guidance to achieve their aims.

This program begins by guiding experienced managers through assessing their own leadership and work styles. It continues by building quality planning skills to identify, align, and prioritize improvement opportunities within a unit or care team through leveraging both qualitative and quantitative data. Participants will also learn basic quality improvement and quality control tools and methods, as well as strategies to engage front-line staff in each of these phases of the improvement journey.

# What You'll Learn

After completing this online course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the skills, tools, and resources needed for mid-level managers to effectively lead quality improvement efforts at the local level.

  • Demonstrate how to link department-level improvement activities to the organization’s goals and overall strategic plan.

  • Apply approaches to quality planning, quality control, and quality improvement that can be used by mid-level managers to successfully partner with front-line staff and key stakeholders.

Throughout this virtual program, experts with a wealth of experience in improvement science, measurement, modeling, coaching, innovation, and making the business case for improvement will facilitate discussion about the key takeaways from the cases while teaching the skills managers need to excel in their jobs.

# Who Should Attend

This program is for anyone who has direct reports and manages an organization's strategic goals at the microsystem or unit level, including:
  • Nurses
  • Physicians
  • Directors
  • Managers (Especially Risk, Quality, and/or Safety Managers)
  • Supervisors
  • Department heads
  • Health care administrators

Participants from any discipline — including leaders who work in health care and clinical settings, academia, industry, health care insurance, and other settings — are welcome to participate. This program is also particularly beneficial for those transitioning or desiring to transition from a clinical to a leadership role.

Panel Discussion: How Healthy is Canada’s Information Environment? Action in the Face of Misinformation

This event is hosted by the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Club Toronto

Canada has experienced stunning change over the past several years in the way Canadians receive information. Across the spectrum of traditional news, social media, and emerging online sources, the way Canadians consume facts and understand this country has shifted in a seismic way. In a short time, we’ve moved from a few single points of truth to a wildly fragmented ecosystem, often split into echo chambers driven by bias and preference, fueled by opaque algorithms, and plagued by polarization. This dynamic environment is challenging leaders across industries on how to respond and best reach Canadians with the information they care about most.

The stakes are particularly high in the health sector, where misinformation can have life-or-death consequences. To shed light on this critical issue, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) has commissioned Abacus Data to explore the current state of Canada’s information environment. Their annual CMA Health & Media Tracking Survey with original polling data offers insights into the spread of health misinformation, its drivers, and actionable strategies to address it. Join Canadian Club Toronto on January 21 for the release of the 2025 survey results and new polling data, offering a compelling case study at the intersection of health and media. This conversation will not only unpack the current challenges but also explore the opportunities for meaningful change.

Abacus Data CEO David Coletto will present the results of this work, followed by a panel of experts who will discuss what needs to happen next.

This expert panel features:

  • Dr. Joss Reimer – President, Canadian Medical Association
  • Dr. Theresa Tam – Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer
  • Craig Silverman – ProPublica National Reporter & Misinformation expert
  • Angela Pacienza – Executive Editor, The Globe and Mail
  • Moderated by Elamin Abdelmahmoud, Host of CBC Radio’s COMMOTION

The in-person event, which starts at 11:30 am, is sold out. For virtual attendees, please note that the live stream will begin at approximately  12:30pm ET & the link will be provided closer to the event date.

Building Social Connections: Designing multi-unit housing for social well-being

This webinar is presented by the National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health.

Join Happy Cities for an engaging discussion on designing housing that fosters well-being and social connection. As urban areas across Canada push for denser, faster housing development, it is critical to ensure these spaces support community connection, sustainability, and inclusion.

Happy Cities, a leading urban planning consultancy, has partnered with Hey Neighbour Collective and Simon Fraser University researchers to co-create innovative policies with five municipalities and one First Nation. Drawing on a decade of research in public health, psychology, and behavioural economics, this collaboration has culminated in a new toolkit offering evidence-based strategies for designing sociable multi-unit housing.

This session will explore how the design of multi-unit housing impacts neighbourly interactions and resident well-being. We’ll share actionable principles and insights to advocate for inclusive, connected communities.

As we face growing challenges like housing affordability, social isolation, and climate change, strengthening social connections is key to creating resilient, sustainable communities. Explore the toolkit here.

2S/LGBTQQIA+ Communities: Chronic Health & Administrative Health Data

This webinar is presented by Health Data Research Network Canada  (HDRN) as part of their Big IDEAs aout Health Data Speaker Series.

# About the Presentation:

There are increasing opportunities to leverage administrative health data to better understand the experiences of communities who face inequities, including 2S/LGBTQQIA+ communities. But how do 2S/LGBTQQIA+ people feel about these kinds of health data and their linkage to community-based research? For community-based researchers, what can administrative health data tell us about how 2S/LGBTQQIA+ people “show up” in the data? In this session, Anu Radha Verma and Dr. Nathan Lachowsky will discuss the feasibility and acceptability of administrative health data linkage amongst 2S/LGBTQQIA+ communities, the possibility of understanding chronic diseases and their management in our communities, and possibilities for the future.

PLEASE NOTE: This presentation is in English. The webinar will be recorded and posted on hdrn.ca.

Co-Designing Integrated and Equitable Supports for Newcomers & Refugees

This webinar is presented by the National Newcomers Navigation Network (N4)

The settlement experiences of newcomers to Canada are shaped by broader social, systemic, and structural forces that can be better understood using an intersectional lens. However, intersectionality is often seen as too theoretical to operationalize within frontline settlement service delivery. Join us for a webinar with members from the “Beyond Technology, Beyond Healthcare” project, as they share lessons learned from a series of multistakeholder dialogues that can transform approaches in ensuring responsive and equitable service delivery for newcomers to Canada.

# Speakers:

Dr. Ibukun Abejirinde, Scientist, Institute for Better Health, Trillium Health Partners

Isabelle Choon-Kon-Yune, Research Assistant, Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care

Dr. Nancy Clark, Associate Professor, Qualitative Health Researcher, University of Victoria
