Community Initiatives are a fundamental part of how Alliance members foster resilient, healthy communities and improve health and wellbeing at the population level. CIs achieve collective social, environmental, and/or policy change that benefits whole communities. They are often community-led and are always delivered in partnership with community members and organizations.

FROM BARRIERS TO SOLUTIONS: A community-based study of Healthcare Access for Reproductive-Age Newcomer Women in Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon

# ABSTRACT 

Healthcare should be for everyone, but for newcomer women, it often isn’t. Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park are vibrant, diverse “arrival communities” and home to thousands of newcomer women building their futures. Yet for many, simply accessing basic healthcare remains an uphill climb.

From loneliness to social connection: charting a path to healthier societies

This landmark report from the WHO Commission on Social Connection highlights that social isolation and loneliness are widespread, with serious but under-recognized impacts on health, well-being, and society. Drawing on the latest evidence, the report makes a compelling case for urgent action. It outlines practical, scalable solutions to strengthen social connection – and calls on policy-makers, researchers and all sectors to treat social health with the same urgency as physical and mental health.

Social health—the neglected third pillar

This editorial by from The Lancet Public Health  is a response to the flagship report From loneliness to social connection - charting a path to healthier societies, published by the WHO on June 30, 2025. The editorial summarizes the WHO report and emphasizes the essential nature of social connection for the health and resilience of individuals and societies, and it calls on governments to "make social health, with social connection at its core, a priority."

“Round Peg in a Square Hole”: Lessons from Community Health Promotion Practice on Dynamics of Accountability, Reporting and Evaluation, and Governance

# Abstract

This paper presents results from a small-scale institutional ethnography study of reporting requirements and evaluation practices in two urban community health centers (CHCs), as a sample of community-based nonprofit organizations that focus on social justice and health equity. The study illuminated complex relationships among accountability, reporting and evaluation, and governance.

Webinar: Successes from Black-Focused Social Prescribing

This webinar is presented by the Alliance for Healthier Communities in partnership with participating organizations and evaluators in the Black-Focused Social Prescribing (BFSP) project.

The 2.5-year pilot was implemented by The Alliance for Healthier Communities in collaboration with four Community Health Centres (CHCs) in Ontario: Black Creek, Somerset West, TAIBU, and Rexdale. Through BFSP, dedicated staff called Link Navigators connect clients to programs and services. This project won the National Social Prescribing Innovation Award in 2024.
