  3. Letter to Premier Ford and Minister Elliott regarding extended coverage for uninsured people

Dear Hon. Premier Ford and Deputy Premier and Hon. Minister Elliott,

The Alliance for Healthier Communities thanks Ontario’s government for waiving the three month OHIP waiting period and covering the costs of COVID-19 service for uninsured people who do not meet the criteria for coverage. This is a critical step in ensuring that anyone in need of care during the COVID-19 crisis can access it. We thank Ontario’s government for taking this monumental step and modelling leadership for all sectors in this time of crisis.

To “flatten the curve” and change the trajectory of this pandemic, healthcare must be accessible to all populations in Ontario. It is essential that people at risk of contracting the virus or showing symptoms are not afraid of accessing healthcare due to lack of OHIP coverage, or because they lack the funds to pay registration fees and hospital bills. The Alliance thanks Ontario’s government for taking steps to ensure that no one will be discouraged from seeking screening or treatment for COVID-19 for financial reasons.

The Alliance represents over 100 community led primary healthcare organizations. Our members work to eliminate the inequities that leave 3.5 million people in Ontario at risk of poor health. Extended coverage will make care accessible for people who need support during this difficult global crisis.

We look forward to continuing to work with you to improve access to quality healthcare for all people and communities in Ontario.

Sincerely.

Adrianna TetleyCEO, Alliance for Healthier Communities
