 Planned Parenthood Toronto (PPT) is a fully accredited community health centre that provides primary health care services to youth 13 to 29 years as well as health promotion programming, education, training and research to improve the health and well-being of Toronto’s diverse communities. PPT offers health services at our downtown main site, our North York Satellite site, as well as through mobile health units that work across Toronto.

# About the position 

 We are currently seeking 2 Nurse Practitioners (RN(EC)). Shifts will  primarily be available during our Saturday clinics (shifts run from 9:30am to 2:30pm). Additional shifts will be available to cover vacation and other planned absences. Successful candidates must be available to work at least 1 Sat/month.

At PPT, Nurse Practitioners work within an interdisciplinary health care team to independently and collaboratively provide comprehensive primary and episodic health care to clients with an emphasis on sexual & reproductive health, health promotion, disease prevention and health education. Our Saturday Clinic appointments focus on sexual and reproductive health care needs but may include other primary care issues.

We are happy to support newer Nurse Practitioners and will provide a robust orientation that will include training to ensure clinicians are confident providing care related to routine appointment types at PPT’s Saturday Clinic (for example, IUD and Nexplanon insertion and removal, Gender-Affirming Care, and Medical Abortion)

POSITION OVERVIEW                                                                                                                 

The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Registered Nurse – Extended Class (RN(EC)) is a nurse specialist in primary health care with advanced knowledge and decision-making skills, who practices autonomously to offer the full scope of primary health care nurse practitioner practice.  The RN(EC) is expected to meet the standards of practice specific to the Extended Class and function in accordance with relevant legislation and standards of nursing practice set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

At PPT, the RN(EC) works within an interdisciplinary health care team to independently and collaboratively provide comprehensive primary and episodic health care to clients with an emphasis on sexual and reproductive health, health promotion, disease prevention and health education. The RN(EC) is responsible for supporting the Agency's mission, values and objectives. PPT is also committed to support NP learning - this position is an excellent opportunity to build your skills related to IUD and Implant insertions/removals, Medical Abortion, and Gender Affirming Care.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Nurse Practitioner RN(EC), Locum/Casual practices within the scope of the Extended Class registration through the College of Nurses of Ontario and the policies and procedures of PPT. Physicians support and act as a primary liaison with the RN(EC) as needed in providing care to clients.

Direct client care:

  • Provides virtual, over-the-phone and in-person client-centred comprehensive primary and episodic health care to clients as outlined and appropriate within the Extended Class scope of practice.

  • Works independently and collaboratively with members of the interdisciplinary team; consults with other health care professionals when client’s condition is beyond the RN(EC) scope of practice and transfers care if appropriate. 

  • Provides health education, health promotion, and supportive counselling and/or crisis intervention to clients where appropriate.

  • Advocates on an individual basis for and with clients to other agencies and institutions.

  • Completes follow-up required by client and/or refers when appropriate.

  • Provides anonymous Standard HIV and Point of Care HIV testing with appropriate pre- and post-test counselling.

  • Provides educational information on IUDs and does IUD placements and removals with pain management options (training can be provided).

  • Provides educational information on the birth control implant and does implant insertions and removals (training can be provided).

  • Provides gender-affirming care and supports trans clients for hormone therapy and puberty suppression (training can be provided). 

  • Provides medical abortion medication to clients.

  • Supports clients with mental health concerns.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Maintains complete and accurate records of client visits including data required by Ontario Health.

  • Provides support in the development of Health Services protocols and collects data and other appropriate administrative tasks as required. 

# Qualifications

  • BScN or equivalent and membership in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as an RN with Extended Class.

  • At least 3 years’ experience working as a Nurse Practitioner in an expanded role in a community-based setting.

  • Proficiency in current nursing physical assessment and treatment methods.

  • Experience and knowledge working with youth and sexual health issues.

  • Proficiency and experience working in a computerized environment.

  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records software an asset.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity goals and principles, sexual and reproductive rights and to being youth positive, 2SLGBTQ positive, sex-positive, sex work positive and to being inclusive of diverse sexual and gender identities.

  • Commitment to reproductive justice and a pro-choice philosophy.

  • Commitment to working from a community development perspective.

  • Commitment to working cooperatively in a community-based setting as part of an inter-disciplinary team. 

  • Commitment to a client-centred model of health care delivery and experience working in a community development framework.
