Salary Range: $14.06/hr. to $18.76/hr.

LAMP Community Health Centre is a multi-service, community based charitable organization that provides a wide range of programs and services to improve a person's health. LAMP uses a co-ordinated approach to connect people to medical services and other programs that build personal resources. By providing services that improve physical, emotional, social and economic well-being, people can better control their health and environment.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Youth Program Manager and working within program objectives and organizational goals, the Youth Program Support Worker supports the Youth Leader with the youth activities, which enhances the health of youth and their families.
The incumbent will ensure that all organizational policies are followed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, implementing and evaluating recreational-social and skill building programs, special events and fundraising activities for youth and pre-teens.
  • Help create a safe, supportive, empowering, and welcoming environment for youth to be active decision-makers and partners in the program, as well as, assist in providing supervision to program participants including behaviour management, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention.
  • Build healthy relationships with youth providing support, information, referral, and informal counseling, including support for occasional community crises (i.e. community violence, sudden deaths, pandemic) as needed.
  • Utilizes appropriate methods for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, ethnic, sexual orientations, lifestyles, and physical abilities.
  • Build and maintain positive community and program working relationships and collaborations. Will also assist in carrying out outreach and promoting youth programs.
  • Play a leadership role in ensuring that the youth program and LAMP’s policies and procedures are followed.
  • Build positive working relationships with caretakers/key staff on-site/off-site to maintain safe programs and enhance problem solving. In addition, ensure that participants respect the program and external facilities and follow the rules designated for the site.
  • Assist in scheduling youth program activities and in creating monthly activity calendars, program promotion materials (i.e. posters and brochures) as required.
  • Record daily attendance, log program notes daily, collect and summarize statistics, and ensure participant registration and volunteer forms are filled out and submitted to LAMP administrative staff.
  • Work with the team to solicit program donations and organize youth driven fundraising initiatives.
  • Support the Youth Program Leader in purchasing and managing program resources (ex. food, Equipment, and supplies).

Required Qualifications

  • Some Post-secondary education in related field, such as Child Youth Worker and experience working with youth.
  • Demonstrated experience working with youth from various cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, and developmental backgrounds, with an awareness of and sensitivity to youth issues.
  • Strong leadership, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, de-escalation, and group facilitation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively across all levels of the organization’s diverse workforce.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to clearly convey information and ideas.
  • Positive attitude and dependable with strong initiative and the ability to work both independently and in a team oriented atmosphere.
  • Open minded, eager and willing to constantly learn and improve oneself.
  • Knowledge of LAMP Community Health Centre, the Central Etobicoke community, and/or a second language that is reflective of the community being served are all preferable assets.

Proficiency in the Following Computer Skills

  • Solid working knowledge and ability to navigate a PC windows environment, including shared drives.
  • Strong skills and experience using Microsoft applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint & Publisher).
  • Strong skills and ability to easily navigate the internet/intranet environment.
  • Ability to learn new software quickly and willingness to continuously develop technology skills.

Working Conditions

  • Requires frequent evening(s), occasional weekend commitments, and regular travel to off-site location(s)/community partner locations.
  • Must work well under pressure during conflicts in the program while supervising large (between 10 and 70) groups of participants.
  • Some work outdoors and in the community will be required.
  • Administrative work performed in the office is sometimes subject to conditions that range from noise, persistent interruptions, and demands for time, crisis intervention, and client support.
  • Will frequently be subject to high noise levels in program (i.e. from 10-70 participants, music playing).
  • May occasionally need to relate to members of the public who exhibit challenging, atypical or hostile behaviours and/or communication.
  • Ability to effectively understand the appreciation of guiding fundamentals at LAMP, i.e. Health Promotion, Anti-Oppression; Harm Reduction and the principles of community-based practice.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional data entry, with short periods of time sitting stationary in front of a monitor while keyboarding.
  • Ability to balance all job requirements in a busy atmosphere, including responding promptly to all communication.
  • Frequent standing for extended periods of time and some frequent lifting may be required.
  • Demonstrates good and safe work habits, and maintains a clean working environment.
  • Ensures that staff and clients are compliant with LAMP’s Health & Safety regulations and LAMP’s policies and procedures, including the immediate reporting of any breaches of Health & Safety or Environmental incidents, accidents or concerns to their respective manager/supervisor and/or the Director, Human Resources and Operations.
